The restoration - A return to origins
A complex restoration work, taking nearly six years, strongly wanted by a group
of local entrepreneurs: Vittorio Livi of Fiam Italia, Massimo and Alberta Ferretti
of Aeffe, motivated by a shared love for their homeland.
With the valuable collaboration of the Municipality of Montegridolfo and Emilia
Romagna Region, on 24th June 1994 Montegridolfo once again opened its doors, properly
its “Gate’ s Tower”, the same tower built by the Malatesta way back in 1338. The
only other element left standing intact are the solid city walls. The restoration
work was carried out with painstaking attention to every detail and an almost
philological refinement. The same technique was applied to the major structural
work and the recreation of the original furniture.
The art historian Pier Giorgio Pasini described the aesthetic qualities of Montegridolfo
as unchanged and unspoiled, even after the restoration work, and still retaining
some historical and magic mood as “a dignified edifice, simple but not poor, humble
but not slovenly”.
