CASTRUM
MONTISGRIDULPHI |

Upon entering through the Gate Tower, one is immediately bewitched
by the castle’s vibrant atmosphere.
The rolling green hills fan out around and below as in a flower’s petals rolling
gently down to the Adriatic Sea which is only a handful of kilometres distant.
In the distance isolated towers, castles and old churches,
nearby towns and villages brimming with history can be seen.
The tranquil accord of Nature with the historic witness of past ages - now fully
restored to its earlier glory - is awe inspiring to the soul.
A truly ancient castle dating back to medieval times, destined
to have been a constant bone of contention through the centuries due to its
uniquely strategic position. Situated right on the border betweenthe provinces
of Romagna and Marche, Montegridolfo, stands on the border of the lands
belonging to two noble families, the Malatesta of Rimini and the Montefeltro,
Lords of nearby Urbino. It all startedin the XIII century when the castle
was chosenas a residence by the Gridolfi family.
From that moment and for the next three centuries the Conca valley saw a never ending struggle between the two families.
As a result Montegridolfo kept changing hands, was repeatedlysacked
and suffered great strife at every turn. Indeed in 1336 it was totally
destroyed by Nolfo, count of Urbino. The following year was reconstructed
by the patriarch of the Malatesta family, Galeotto. Peace was only restored
in the XVI century and since then the Malatesta family has remained absolute sovereign. |
